the gurseva project

The Gurseva project was set up in 1998 during the height of the Bosnian refugee crisis to extend the Guru’s philosophy of Sarbatt da Bhala (universal peace and prosperity for all).

The importance that Sikhs attach to working for and wishing well to others can be seen in the fact that a Sikh prays aloud at least twice a day: 'O God, in Your Name shower Your blessings on everyone.' In other words, Sikhs pray not only for themselves but also for the whole brotherhood of humanity.

It has been explained that Sikhs must respect all people. They may appear different because of their language, colour, figure, social habits but these variations are superficial and the result of different cultures and climates in which one is born and reared. Internally, we all have the same spirit. Just as gold can be made into ornaments of different designs but it remains gold, so people's outward appearance can be different but still they remain human beings created by the same God.

Envirosave

Gurseva was awarded the Gate Gourmet Community Fund in December 2008 for its innovative Envirosave project thanks to the Thames Community Foundation.

• Envirosave is about educating the local community on reducing, recycling, and reusing pretty much everything, thus preventing items going into landfill.
• This is a cultural cohesion project which will promote community integration and encourage people to play an active part in making our neighbourhood a better place to live.
• Through a series of workshops, leaflets and posters in the local area we will inform one another on great ways to improve the amount we use.
• Donating our unwanted items through websites such as gumtree.com and freecycle.co.uk.
• We aim to create a sense of cultural cohesion on how various cultures respect mother earth and the environment.
